What the Letters and Numbers Mean
In the U.S., respirators are certified by NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, under 42 CFR Part 84. The letter tells you about oil resistance and the number tells you the minimum filtration efficiency against a test aerosol at the most penetrating particle size (around 0.3 microns):
- N = not resistant to oil; R = somewhat resistant; P = oil-proof.
- 95 = filters at least 95% of test particles; 99 = 99%; 100 = 99.97%.
So an N95 is a non-oil-resistant filter at 95%, and a P100 is an oil-proof filter at 99.97%, the same efficiency as a HEPA filter. Wildfire smoke contains no oil aerosols, so the N-versus-P distinction does not matter for smoke; the number does. The filtration classes are defined in 42 CFR Part 84, NIOSH maintains a searchable Certified Equipment List of every approved model, and a legitimate N95 carries the NIOSH mark, the approval number (TC-84A-xxxx), and the manufacturer's name printed on the mask itself.
KN95 is not a NIOSH designation. It is the 95% class under China's GB2626 standard (currently GB2626-2019). The filtration requirement is similar to N95, but the test protocol, fit requirements and quality oversight differ, and no U.S. agency verifies individual KN95 products. KF94 is the comparable Korean standard at 94%. FFP2 is the European standard at 94%.

Fit Beats Filtration
A filter rated at 95% does nothing for the air that slips around its edges, and on an untested wearer a poorly fitted mask can leak a large share of every breath. This is why the EPA's wildfire smoke course stresses a tight seal, and why workplaces fit-test employees before issuing respirators. At home, do a user seal check every time: cup your hands over the mask, exhale sharply, and feel for air escaping at the nose bridge or cheeks; then inhale sharply and the mask should pull in slightly. Adjust the nose clip and straps until it passes.
Practical fit rules for smoke:
- Head straps beat ear loops. Two straps behind the head pull the mask onto the face; ear loops mostly hold it near the face. This is the biggest practical difference between most N95s and most KN95s.
- Facial hair breaks the seal. Any beard under the edge of the mask is a leak path. Shave, or use a P100 half-mask with a large sealing surface.
- Cup vs. fold-flat. Both can seal well; pick the shape that matches your face and passes the seal check.
- Replace when damp, dirty or hard to breathe through. During heavy smoke that can be daily.
Exhalation Valves
Some N95s and most P100s have an exhalation valve, a one-way flap that vents your breath without passing it through the filter. For smoke, that is a feature: it reduces heat and moisture buildup and makes exertion tolerable, without changing how well the mask filters what you inhale. The only reason to avoid a valve is if you also want the mask to protect people around you from respiratory infection. For a long day outdoors in smoke, a valved mask is the more comfortable choice.
When to Step Up to P100
P100 filters remove 99.97% of particles and, in reusable elastomeric half-masks, seal far better than any disposable. Consider one if you work outdoors during smoke season, live where the AQI regularly exceeds 200, have asthma or COPD, or do cleanup near burned areas where ash is disturbed. Elastomeric half-masks also accept combination cartridges that add activated carbon for the organic gases and odors in smoke; a particle filter alone does not touch those, a distinction our HEPA vs activated carbon guide explains in the indoor context. The trade-offs are cost, weight and the difficulty of talking through one.
Kids, Pregnancy and Other Sensitive Groups
NIOSH does not approve any respirator for children, and standard N95s do not seal on small faces. The CDC's advice for children during smoke is to reduce exposure by staying indoors with filtered air rather than relying on a mask. If a child must be outside, a small-size KF94 or KN95 that sits snugly from nose bridge to chin is the least-bad option; check that the child can breathe comfortably and take it off if they struggle. Anyone with heart or lung disease should talk to their doctor before wearing a respirator for extended periods, since the added breathing resistance can be a strain. Spotting Counterfeits
- No NIOSH mark, approval number or manufacturer name printed on the mask itself (packaging alone does not count).
- “NIOSH-approved KN95” is a contradiction; NIOSH does not approve KN95s.
- Ear loops on a mask labeled N95; NIOSH-approved N95s use head straps.
- Claims of FDA approval for smoke protection; the FDA regulates medical use, not particulate filtration.
- Check the manufacturer and approval number against the NIOSH certified equipment list before buying in bulk.
Gear for exercising in poor air
If you're heading outdoors while the air is poor, a home purifier won't help you out on the road. Two pieces of gear actually protect you where you'll be breathing hardest:

Masks Are the Backup, Not the Plan
A respirator protects the minutes you have to be outside. It does not filter carbon monoxide or the volatile gases in smoke, and it is hot, uncomfortable and easy to wear badly.
