Why Wildfire Smoke Is a PM2.5 Problem
Smoke is a mix of gases and particles, but the health damage is driven by the particles, and most of them are smaller than 2.5 microns. Particles that small stay airborne for hours, follow air into your home through cracks, door sweeps, bathroom fans and kitchen vents, and once inhaled travel deep into the lungs and into the bloodstream. The EPA's wildfires and indoor air quality guidance is blunt about the fix: create a clean room, keep it closed, and filter the air inside it with a portable air cleaner or a high-efficiency HVAC filter.
That framing tells you what to shop for. You are buying a machine to remove fine particles from a defined volume of air, quickly, for days at a time. Everything below follows from that.
1. True HEPA, Not “HEPA-Type”
A true HEPA filter is rated to capture 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, which is the hardest size for a fiber filter to catch; both larger and smaller particles are captured at higher rates. Marketing terms like “HEPA-type,” “HEPA-like” or “99% HEPA” have no standard behind them and often mean a far less dense filter. For smoke, insist on the real thing. Because a true HEPA filter is dense, the fan behind it matters just as much, which is where the next spec comes in.
2. CADR: Size the Purifier to Your Room First
Clean Air Delivery Rate is the one spec that predicts whether a purifier can keep up. Measured under the AHAM AC-1 standard and published for smoke, dust and pollen, CADR tells you how many cubic feet per minute of particle-free air the unit delivers on its highest setting. For smoke, use the smoke CADR, which is always the lowest of the three.
AHAM's rule of thumb, described on its air filtration standards page, is that smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room's floor area in square feet, assuming an 8-foot ceiling. That works out to about five air changes per hour. During a smoke event, when particles are pouring in continuously, more is better: the EPA notes that higher CADR clears a room faster, so sizing up one bracket is a reasonable hedge.

3. Activated Carbon for the Smell (Optional but Worth It)
HEPA removes particles. It does nothing to the gases in smoke: the acrolein, formaldehyde, benzene and other volatile organic compounds that make a smoky room smell smoky and irritate eyes and throat. Activated carbon adsorbs many of those gases. A thin carbon-dusted mesh saturates in days; a purifier with a pound or more of granular carbon keeps working through a multi-week smoke season. 4. Run It Continuously, and Close the Room
A purifier is a rate, not a switch. Smoke infiltrates constantly, so a unit that runs 24/7 on medium or high holds indoor PM2.5 low, while one cycled on for an hour lets levels climb right back. During a smoke event:
- Keep windows and exterior doors closed; seal obvious gaps with towels or weatherstripping.
- Pick one “clean room” (usually the bedroom) and keep its door shut so the purifier only fights the air in that space.
- Disable auto or eco modes that let the fan idle; many built-in sensors under-read PM2.5.
- Set central HVAC to recirculate or fan-only with the freshest filter you have, and skip fresh-air intake.
- Avoid indoor sources: no candles, frying, vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum, or gas stove use.

5. Filter Changes: Smoke Season Shortens the Interval
Manufacturers typically quote 6 to 12 months for a HEPA filter and 3 to 6 months for carbon, but those figures assume ordinary household dust. A week of heavy smoke can load a filter with what would normally take months. Signs it is time: a visibly gray filter, a noticeable drop in airflow at the same fan speed, or a return of the smoky smell from a unit that used to remove it. The Honest Budget Option: Box Fan + MERV-13 Filter
If a purifier is out of budget or sold out, the Corsi-Rosenthal box is a real solution. Tape four 20x20-inch MERV-13 furnace filters into a cube with a 20-inch box fan on top blowing outward, and a cardboard shroud over the fan corners. Even the simplest version, one filter taped to the back of a fan, helps. The EPA tested these DIY cleaners and published the results on its DIY air cleaner research page: they meaningfully reduce indoor PM2.5, with the four-filter cube outperforming a commercial unit in some configurations.
The trade-offs are honest ones: they are loud, bulky, and MERV-13 captures fewer of the smallest particles per pass than HEPA (it compensates with high airflow). Safety matters: use a fan made after 2012 with a fused plug, do not drape anything over the motor, and do not leave it running unattended or overnight. Shop MERV-13 furnace filters and a box fan, and you can build one in fifteen minutes.
What to Skip
- Ozone generators and “ionizers” as the main technology. The EPA says ozone at safe concentrations does not clean air, and ozone is itself a lung irritant, the last thing you want during smoke.
- Units with no published CADR. If a manufacturer will not state a smoke CADR, assume it is low.
- “Whole-home” claims from a single small unit. One purifier cleans one closed room. Buy per room or move it with you.
Bottom Line
Size first with the calculator, then buy true HEPA at or above that CADR, add carbon if smell matters, run it continuously in a closed room, and change filters when smoke season is over. If you cannot buy in time, build a box-fan cleaner. Any of those beats waiting it out.
